The information on this page informs you where you may drive and
where-not off proclaimed roads within the central area of the Namibian Coast
between the Ugab River, now referred to as the Central Area of the Greater
National Coastal Park. Background information
Human activities peak during the holiday seasons in the area
between Sandwich Harbour in the south, and the Ugab River in the north.
Early 2008 the Cabinet of the Republic of Namibia proclaimed the
area between the Kuiseb-Delta and Swakopmund as well as the area between
Swakopmund and the Ugab River as National Parks. This is to improve the
management and conservation of the habitats, bio-diversity and the wildlife they
support. In many cases the habitat and wildlife are unique and some are very
sensitive to human disturbance. A Management and Development Plan
for this central area has been compiled after years of studies, expert
inputs and public consultations. Similar plans are being compiled for the Skeleton Coast and Namib-Naukluft areas.
The central area of the coast will become part of a greater
National Coastal Park, stretching from the Kunene River down to the Orange River
and which would get a name decided upon Cabinet after consultations. The greater
National Coastal Park would thus include the Skeleton Coast, the current
National West Coast Tourist Recreation Area, the area between Swakopmund and the
Kuiseb-Delta, the Namib-Naukluft Park and the Sperrgebiet Area, making it one of
the world's largest and most prestigious National Parks.
The central area has been zoned, after a long process of
consultation with all key stakeholders, into areas that are environmentally
sensitive, suitable for various types of land use, and that may be able to
accommodate high impact activities. it also includes new rules to ensure
compatible land usage smooth management.
