Leaving Swakopmund in the early morning you
take the route crossing the Coastal Dune Belt and follow the Kuiseb
River which allows you to see clearly how the Namib Desert is
divided into the gravel plains desert north of the Kuiseb and the
Great Sand sea of dunes to the south of the river. You'll fly deeper
as far as the famous Gobabeb Desert Research Station and then cut
south to enter the airspace of the Great Sand Sea. Flying over the
picturesque Sossusvlei you fly down to Luderitz Airport where you
disembark to be collected by vehicle for your guided tour of
Kolmanskop the abandoned diamond mining "Ghost Town". You'll visit
the museum and learn about the great diamond rush of 1907. Of how
men sifted the sand to find alluvial diamonds, of how fortunes were
made and lost and of how (Sir) Ernest Oppenheimer, saw the problems
and organised the industry into what was to become known as
Consolidated Diamond Mines. You'll see how in later years the miners
in the desert and their families enjoyed a high standard of living.
And witness the shifting desert sands swallowing the houses. Your
guide will then take you to the charming little town of Luderitz for
a tour of the town and lunch at a restaurant of your choice. The

southern Namibia where entry to the public is restricted as the land
is reserved for diamond mining. You'll follow the coastline to
